First off, he has a lot more honest emotion in his voice than he normally does. However, this ballad has two things that his normal works do not. I can understand why he was hesitant to do this song, since it is almost a safe hit for Mars to do a ballad. This is the third hit song he had, and I've really enjoyed all three of them. At the end of each chorus, he says "Now my baby's dancing.but she's dancing with another man", showing that he holds no ill will towards her, just regret at the mistakes he made when he was her man. However, rather than just regretting what happened, Bruno Mars regrets what he did, and admits to all the mistakes he made. The lyrics are pretty obvious to guess, but Bruno Mars is singing a lament about the one that got away. Luckily, Bruno Mars delivers on that front, showing a lot of emotion, something that is key to making a piano ballad work. Piano ballads can be tricky to not make boring, and your vocals have to be solid to keep that from happening. Apparently, he was inspired by the likes of Billy Joel and Elton John, and it really shows. This music is pure piano, and in a good way. All the flaws of both, and the good points of neither. All in all, possibly one of the worst country rap songs I've heard. His verse belongs about as well as Wiz Khalifa's verse in "Payphone". The music is not bad, and Nelly is a really good rapper, but even he presents problems by just being jammed into the song without making any effort to get him to fit in. Ignoring the lyrics, which are cheesy even by country standards and non-sensical, this song still has a serious issue with the performance of Florida Georgia Line, who show why you should always put some emotion in your voice. This is an example of how to do one badly. Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem" is an example of that. There are good ways to do country rap songs. This song is about picking up women, saying they make him want to roll their windows down and cruise. To be fair, Nelly is a solid rapper, but even he doesn't sound very invested in his part. Vocally, Florida Georgia Line sound bored for the most part, but they sound flat-out without personality with Autotune. ![]() The guitars fit in, but the loud drums sound more like hip-hop than country. Music is.not what I expected from a country song. This song wasn't well liked by Todd, but I've disagreed with him quite often on this list, so let's get to it. #9: "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line feat. I don't know about worst song of the year, but this certainly wins my vote for "most complete missing of its own point". Singing in a mildly loud voice about how you've got the eye of the tiger, and how you're louder than a lion doesn't work. ![]() ![]() It's a classic case of "show, don't tell". The music is too lackadaisical to really hold my interest, as is Katy Perry's singing. If you are going to do a self-empowerment song, you should do one thing: not make it boring. She's talking about how she's louder than a lion, and how we're going to hear her roar. ![]() She does seem to be cutting down on the autotune, though.Īs for the lyrics, this music is one of those self-empowerment songs, inspiring women. It's not exactly monotone, but there is not a lot of range. She did decently last year, but this year really shows how limited her vocal range is. As for Katy Perry's vocals, she will not ever win awards for her vocal talent. Even when it gets louder in the chorus with guitar kicking in, it still isn't all that interesting. Unlike the music in most of her songs, however, it is way too repetitive and limp, not doing much to hold your interest. Music starts with a soft, gentle piano line. Starting off with Todd in the Shadows' number one worst hit song of 2013.
